Bodywork - Part 2

Bodywork continues...

I used nylon brush to clean whole car to bare metal. There was not many dents, so there is no need for much bondo. Also there was almost not any rust found anywhere under paint.






Front air dam had some paint that was not solvent resistant. I needed to remove it all, so it does´t cause any problem when it is painted again.



Doors and hood were also almost rust free.

Bodywork - Part 1

One and maybe only body modification that I am going to do is deleting side indicators. Those red ones in rear are not even legal in Finland, and if car is older than -85 it doesn´t need to have front blinkers. Also I think that car is going to look much better without them. And I also removed antenna to obtain cleaner look.



Job was pretty straightforward. Cut sheet metal patches in right size and shape, weld, grind those welds, and smoothen area with tin. And repeat that 3 times, 4 if you count antenna hole.

Got rust?

As soon as I got car registered to Finland, and was driven few days with it, I started to tear down cars interior, so could see if there was rust damage under mats.




So far, so good

After that I removed all soundproofing, so I could see if there´s some rust hidden underneath it.






Nothing else than small surface rust. I used wirebrush to remove them all.

After that I washed undercarriage and wheel wells very carefully, and used wirebrush again to remove all flaked rust proofing and surface rust.









This truly is a rust free example that seller was telling me! Can´t believe that +40 years old cars body could be in this good condition!

The Beginning

This blog is about my -71 Datsun 240Z. I bought it from Hollywood few month ago and after that it started journey towards Finland. Here´s few pics that was taken by seller of the car. There was something in that first picture that catch my eye, and I was sold. It just looked so good...

Paint was flaked and interior was in quite rotten condition, but I was looking project car anyways. Seller told me that car had rust free body and there was all new suspension bushes, shocks, tyres, etc, etc.

Engine and transmission was from 280ZX and it has also ECU from 300ZX (Z31). Car was in driving condition and seller even drive it to shipping company.







After few months waiting, I finally received my new Z. Picked it up from Hämeenlinna, and towed it to Turku.
